Architectural Design V

PHASE 1: This project evaluates the Merdeka 118 Precinct in Kuala Lumpur to identify its character, identity, and potential for responsive architecture and placemaking. As the first phase of designing a Learning Centre for the local community, the study aimed to propose an urban architectural intervention that addresses community needs, preserves the historic character, and enhances public spaces. Focusing on Site B along Jalan Kampung Attap near Bulatan Merdeka, our Townscape Appraisal examined visual, aesthetic, and contextual qualities using nine core indicators, including urban morphology, structure, responsive environments, cultural significance, and S.W.O.T analysis, to guide design decisions and improve spatial and social attributes.
PHASE 2.1: The next phase involves designing a learning center in Kampung Attap, focusing on urban planning and design, aiming to meet community needs, reflect the area's character, and enhance the street-level experience while contributing positively to Kampung Attap's identity. The process includes developing a design concept and strategies that address site-specific challenges through SWOT analysis, establishing a strong sense of place rooted in the urban and historical context, and conducting precedent studies on learning centers in heritage and tropical settings. Key objectives include creating user-centric, responsive designs that integrate spatial layouts, massing, urban spaces, and structural ideas within an urban theory framework.
PHASE 2.2: In this phase, we finalize the design of a 3-5 story learning center in Kampung Attap, spanning 1200-1300 m², serving as a hub for learning, cultural exchange, and social gatherings. The center will include studios, exhibition areas, a mini-library, gathering spaces, a cafeteria, and a souvenir shop, with services and circulation comprising 30% of the built-up area. The design prioritizes outdoor public areas, plazas, and community engagement while integrating form, space, and façade development with considerations for tropical design, accessibility, fire safety, and urban heritage to reflect and adapt to the historic character of the area.
